Remembering the fallen. That’s what the Albany Memorial Library stands for. It is more than just a place for books. It’s a tribute to those who served.

Back when Albany was rural, residents wanted a library. They also wanted to honor soldiers from the Great War. So, they decided to combine these goals. A library would serve as a living memorial.

On Peace Day in 1919, the plan was set. Sholto Smith of Mullins & Smith became the architect. He designed a cottage-style building of stucco and brick. This building still stands today.

Governor-General Lord Jellicoe opened the Albany Memorial Library on December 21, 1922. It became a special place for the community. The library also honored local heroes.

Inside, the east window is dedicated to 23 local men. They died in World War I. A nearby plaque remembers seven men. They died in World War II. These features made the library a true war memorial.

For many years, the Albany Memorial Library served the community. It was the main library until 2004. That’s when a larger library opened. But the original memorial library remains important.

The Albany Memorial Library is a Category A heritage building. The entire block is protected. A totara tree in front commemorates the Country Women’s Institute’s 25th anniversary in Albany.

The Albany Memorial Library stands as a testament to community spirit. It is also a place of remembrance. It shows how a community can honor its past while building for the future.
