Dare to step into the world of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School? This isn’t just another school. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School has a rich history and a vibrant present.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School began as Katong Girls’ School in 1924. Two Christian ministers founded it. They were reverends Tay Sek Tin and Tan Leng Tian. The school started small at 1 Joo Chiat Terrace. Only eleven pupils attended. Both boys and girls were enrolled. English and Chinese classes were both taught.
In 1925, the school moved to Koon Seng Road. It was renamed Choon Guan School. Margaret Dryburgh became principal in 1934. She raised educational standards. The English section became a separate school in 1936. It was called Choon Guan English School. By 1938, it gained grant-in-aid status for boys. J R Richardson became the principal. That same year, Kuo Chuan Girls’ School opened at 36 Joo Chiat Lane. Margaret Dryburgh was also the principal here. The girls’ school had one hundred girls and three teachers.
During the Japanese occupation, the school faced hardship. The school was bombed. It stayed closed for the duration of the war. The boys’ school transformed into a Japanese school. It was named Koon Seng Road School. After the war, the boys’ school reopened on September 24, 1945. Dryburgh English School was established in the afternoon. This was to accommodate more students. The girls’ school reopened the following year. Monica Mary Sirkett became principal.
In 1946, the boys’ school was renamed Presbyterian Boys’ School. B F Atherton became principal in 1951. Gay Wan Guay followed in 1958. Dryburgh English School merged with Presbyterian Boys’ School in 1961. Sia Kah Hui was the principal.
A significant transformation happened in 1985. The two schools merged. They became Kuo Chuan Presbyterian School. By 1987, the school split into primary and secondary sections.
Recently, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024. The celebration included various events. They even put on a musical. To celebrate their 100 year anniversary, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School introduced five houses in 2024. Each house is named after a founding principal. They are Dryburgh House. Richardson House. Lee House. Atherton House. Sirkett House.
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School offers many co-curricular activities. Students can choose from 21 options. These include sports, uniformed groups, and performing arts. There are also clubs and societies. The Robotics Club is a popular choice.
The school has achieved recognition in uniformed groups. The National Police Cadet Corps attained Gold in 2016 and 2017. The Girl Guides also earned Gold in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
The school’s football team also excelled. The B division team secured third place in the second-tier league in 2017.
