Right here in Keysborough, a vibrant tapestry of history and community unfolds. Keysborough is a suburb 27 km southeast of Melbourne. It is one of Melbourne’s largest suburbs by land area. Keysborough’s story begins with the Keys family.

They founded the town sometime after 1878. Imagine the landscape before houses. George Keys and his sons bought land and farmed here since 1844. By 1859, the area north of Carrum Swamp was already known as Keysborough. The Keys family even helped to open a Wesleyan church in 1861.

Until 1978, this area was known as Noble Park South. The post office officially opened in 1973. Then the suburb officially became Keysborough in 1978.

Keysborough is geographically split into three distinct sections. The southern part features market gardens and semi-rural properties. The middle section has large residential and industrial developments. These began in the 2000s. The northern section features housing built from the 1960s to 1990s.

Keysborough has become a melting pot of cultures. In 2016, only 43.5% of people were born in Australia. The next most common countries of birth were Vietnam, Cambodia, India, China and Sri Lanka. About 37.4% of people spoke only English at home. Other languages included Vietnamese, Khmer, Mandarin, Cantonese and Turkish. Keysborough’s religious landscape reflects its diversity too. There is a gurudwara, a Turkish mosque, a Croatian Catholic Church and an Eastern Orthodox church.

Keysborough has several primary and secondary schools. These schools include the Keysborough campus of Haileybury College and Lighthouse Christian College. Parkmore Shopping Centre is a central hub for Keysborough residents. It features a Coles, Woolworths, Kmart and Big W.

Keysborough provides many leisure and sporting opportunities. Keysborough has the Keysborough Tennis Court. Football lovers can join the Keysborough Junior Football Club or the Parkmore Football Club. Gaelic Park is home to the Victoria GAA. Keysborough even has dodgeball. Horse riding lessons are available.

Keysborough is a suburb where community spirit thrives. From its humble beginnings as farmland to its present-day status as a dynamic multicultural hub, Keysborough continues to evolve. It is a place where history and progress intertwine.
