“A mosque built by students?” This is the story of Masjid Al-Bukhori. Masjid Al-Bukhori stands as a testament to the power of cultural exchange. It’s a unique piece of Uzbekistan nestled in the heart of Jakarta, Indonesia. The story begins with a group of architecture students from Gunadarma University. They embarked on a journey to Uzbekistan in March 2020. Their mission was to study the country’s rich Islamic architectural heritage. The students immersed themselves in the historical designs of Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent. They sketched intricate details and learned ancient building techniques. Inspired by their trip, the students returned to Indonesia with a vision. They planned to build a mosque in the Uzbek style. This ambitious project would showcase their newfound knowledge and celebrate the beauty of Uzbek architecture. The Imam Al-Bukhari Mosque, as it was later named, became a reality in Cianjur, within the Gunadarma University Technopark. The mosque opened its doors in April 2021, just before Ramadan. Masjid Al-Bukhori features the distinct architectural hallmarks of Uzbekistan. The mosque’s design reflects the careful study and dedication of the Gunadarma University students. The Embassy of Uzbekistan contributed to the mosque’s interior. They gifted photographs of significant Islamic sites, adding to its cultural richness. Masjid Al-Bukhori stands as a symbol of international collaboration. It’s a beautiful blend of Uzbek heritage and Indonesian craftsmanship. It also serves as a testament to the inspiring potential of educational exchange.
