Imagine a world where compassion meets action. That world is embodied by the Religiosos Camilos. This community stands here in Quito. It represents a legacy of caring for the sick. The Religiosos Camilos are more than just a religious order. They are a beacon of hope.

The story of the Religiosos Camilos begins with St. Camillus de Lellis. He founded the order in 1582. St. Camillus’ life took an unexpected turn. He transitioned from a soldier to a caregiver. A leg wound led him to a hospital in Rome. He observed the inadequate care given to patients. This inspired him to create change.

St. Camillus gathered young men. They shared his desire to serve the sick. They worked at the Ospedale di Santo Spirito. Their dedication led to the creation of a religious community. This community would provide exceptional care for the sick. Thus, the Order of Clerics Regular, Ministers to the Sick was born.

A large red cross became their symbol. St. Camillus chose it. It distinguished members of the order. They wore it on their black cassocks. The red cross later became the international symbol of medical care. Ironically, this was the original Red Cross. It predated the International Red Cross by centuries.

The Camillians’ service extended to the battlefield. St. Camillus created a group of health workers. They assisted soldiers. They were sent to Hungary to care for wounded soldiers.

During the siege of Nagykanizsa, a miracle occurred. A tent holding Camillian supplies burned down. Everything was destroyed. Except one thing. The red cross from a Camillian’s habit survived. The community saw this as divine approval of their mission.

The people of Rome credited St. Camillus with ending a plague. They also believed he ended a famine. For a time, he was known as the Saint of Rome. By his death in 1614, the Camillians served in eight hospitals. These hospitals included Naples, Genoa, Milan and Mantua.

In 1630, a plague ravaged Italy. Over one hundred Camillians helped. Fifty-six died while serving the sick. Another plague struck in 1656. Eighty-six Camillians died caring for the afflicted. Every year, on May 25, the order remembers these Camillian Martyrs of Charity.

The Religiosos Camilos expanded globally. They reached Ireland, England and Australia. Their work extended to Asia, including China and Thailand. They established St. Mary’s Hospital in Taiwan. They run both San Camillo Hospital and Camillian Hospital in Thailand.

In 1997, the Camillians in India started a healthcare initiative. It supported people living with HIV. This complemented their work in pastoral care. They also offered palliative care and jail ministry.

Today, the Order of St. Camillus serves in 42 countries. Its members take a fourth vow. They pledge to serve the poor sick. They even risk their lives for those infected. When the Tiber River flooded, Camillus saved patients. Today, the Camillian Task Force responds to disasters.

Here in Quito, the Religiosos Camilos continue their mission. They embody compassion, service and sacrifice. They coordinate and enhance the charism of St. Camillus De Lellis. Their work aims to humanize healthcare. They believe in the potential within each person. The Hospice San Camilo in Quito expresses this religious community. They serve the sick and teach others to do the same.

The Religiosos Camilos stand as a testament to unwavering dedication. Their legacy inspires us to care for others. They call us to act with compassion. Remember their story as you continue your journey. It’s a story of service. It’s a story of unwavering commitment to those in need.
