Established on October 1 1951 the Hava Harp Okulu initially opened in Eskisehir. This prestigious academy trained officers for the Turkish Air Force. Its history is rich with relocation and reform. Initially focused solely on pilot training the curriculum expanded to include advanced degrees.
The Hava Harp Okulu moved to Izmir between 1954 and 1967. This period saw significant improvements in its educational programs. The training duration increased from three to four years. Graduate-level education was also introduced. The Hava Harp Okulu’s facilities were modernized.
In 1967 a momentous shift occurred. The Hava Harp Okulu relocated to Yesilyurt Istanbul. This location held deep historical significance as the birthplace of Turkish aviation. The new campus boasted modern facilities. The first graduating class from this location celebrated with a grand state ceremony in 1968. The President himself attended.
Subsequent years brought further changes. In 1969 new requirements were added for student pilots including introductory flight training and parachute jumps. The education and training at the Hava Harp Okulu was further refined. The school transitioned to a three-year academic program followed by two years of flight training. A new Yalova Camp was created for training purposes. The 1970s saw the construction of new buildings including amphitheaters and laboratories. The training program was eventually expanded to four years focusing on undergraduate studies.
A significant event that impacted the Hava Harp Okulu was the 1999 Marmara earthquake. The school sustained considerable damage. The graduation ceremony was held in Izmir that year. The damaged buildings were subsequently repaired and strengthened. A new regiment building opened in 1999. The old regiment building was restored in 2000. Many other buildings were also renovated or rebuilt through 2008. The Hava Harp Okulu also added new facilities including a sports complex and indoor swimming pool. A closed-circuit television system was also added and later upgraded to color. Flight training began using T-41 aircraft. The Hava Harp Okulu also incorporated new psychomotor devices for flight aptitude testing and academic instruction.
The Hava Harp Okulu further evolved. It broadened its scope of education. Undergraduate degrees in various engineering fields were added. Women were readmitted to the academy in 1992. Foreign students were also welcomed back. The school became a full-fledged university in 2000. The school played a vital role in the education of Turkish Air Force officers. Its legacy continues to this day.
