Nestled in the heart of Makiki, Hawaii, stands Hanahauoli School, a place where “joyous work” isn’t just a motto, but a way of life. Founded in 1918 by Sophie and George Cooke, Hanahauoli School began as a dream, a unique experiment in progressive education. Imagine a small group of just 16 children, ages six to eleven, gathered at the corner of Nowewehi, now Nehoa, and Makiki Street. This was the first Hanahauoli School, a place where learning was exciting, challenging, and most importantly, enjoyable. The Cookes, inspired by the philosophies of John Dewey, envisioned a school where children learned by doing, where cooperation and experiential learning were paramount. Hanahauoli School even had Honolulu’s first jungle gym! Over the years, Hanahauoli School has grown and evolved, but its core values remain. From its humble beginnings with two small buildings and a kiawe-dotted lawn, the school now boasts state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with 21st-century technology. Yet, the emphasis on outdoor work and play areas remains, a testament to the school’s Hawaiian roots. The school continues to embrace traditions like Makahiki, a Thanksgiving celebration, the Holiday Program, and the 6th Grade odyssey with its stepping stone making and Olympics. These traditions, passed down through generations of students, weave a strong social fabric and teach the value of planning and anticipation. Hanahauoli School is more than just a school; it’s a living testament to the power of joyous work, a place where children are nurtured into lifelong learners.
