Spanning across Thomson Road, the Thomson Flyover stands as a testament to Singapore’s infrastructural development. Before we delve into its significance let’s take a moment to appreciate the sheer scale of this flyover.

The Thomson Flyover is more than just a concrete structure. It’s a vital artery in Singapore’s expressway network. It facilitates smoother traffic flow. This flyover is a critical component of the Pan-Island Expressway or PIE.

Back in the day before 1981 driving from Changi Airport to Jurong could take forever. The Thomson Flyover and the PIE changed all that. They significantly improved travel times across the island.

Interestingly the Thomson Flyover wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. Constructed in 1970 and 1971 it was a simpler affair with just two or three lanes in each direction. Over the years it has been expanded to accommodate increasing traffic.

Do you know that this flyover is connected to a hawker food center? In the 1970s there was a food center named \u201cUnder the Flyover\u201d near the junction of Balestier Road and Thomson Road. It housed hawkers who had been relocated from the streets. It disappeared in the early 1990s. Today the location is a heavy vehicle park with two flyovers.

Imagine the smells of prawn noodles pork porridge and other local delights wafting up towards the flyover. Taxi drivers often frequented this food center. For many Singaporeans it was a place of fond memories.

The Thomson Flyover also played a role in the original Singapore Grand Prix from 1961 to 1973. Parts of Thomson Road formed the Thomson Road Grand Prix circuit. It was a thrilling spectacle.

Thomson Road itself is named after John Turnbull Thomson. He was a Government Surveyor and Chief Engineer of the Straits Settlements in the 19th century.

The Thomson Flyover has witnessed Singapore’s transformation over the decades. It stands as a symbol of progress and connectivity. As you travel across the Thomson Flyover remember the stories it holds.
