“Did you know that this magnificent building we stand before Saint Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church wasn’t always here?”

Saint Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church a cornerstone of Minneapolis’ cultural landscape boasts a rich history spanning over a century. Its current location is far from its humble beginnings.

The story of Saint Mary’s begins in 1900. The first Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis was erected on land now part of the University of Minnesota campus. That original church was replaced in 1909. This new church stood on Lake Street and 10th Avenue. Unfortunately this building met its end in 1955. It was demolished to make way for the current church. Imagine the transition the congregation went through these moves.

The cornerstone of the current Saint Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church was laid in 1956. The church sits on the eastern shore of Bde Maka Ska. Formerly known as Lake Calhoun this location is rich with history. Before the church there stood a cabin built in 1834. Samuel and Gideon Pond two missionaries to the Dakota people built it. This pre-church history adds another layer to the spiritual significance of the site.

The first services in the current church building were held at Easter 1957. It was consecrated in May 1961. The Reverend Father Anthony Coniaris served as parish priest during this period. Father Anthony was a nationally known author lecturer and retreat leader. His international impact stemmed from the publishing company Light and Life. This company spread Orthodox literature worldwide. His contributions to the church were enormous.

Today Saint Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire generations. It offers a profound connection to both the Greek Orthodox tradition and Minneapolis’ unique history. This beautiful church continues its important mission: proclaiming celebrating and sharing the good news. The church serves the poor and needy. It works for social and economic justice. It strives to create fellowship among parishioners and promotes growth in faith. This church truly is a beacon of hope and faith in Minneapolis.
