Have you ever wondered where you can witness the confluence of artistry and geological wonder? That place is Museu Amsterdam Sauer. Founded in 1989 the Museu Amsterdam Sauer marks a turning point. It treasures Brazil’s gemological heritage.

Located in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the museum displays around three thousand exhibits. These include a large collection of gemstones. This collection showcases the passion of Jules Sauer, the gemstone hunter.

Jules Sauer’s journey began in 1939. The young Frenchman sought refuge in Brazil. He escaped Europe during World War II. By 1941 he founded Lapidação Amsterdam. This marked the start of his exploration for Brazil’s treasures.

In 1954, Sauer paid tribute to Martha Rocha, Miss Brazil. Her striking blue eyes inspired him. He named the largest rough aquamarine after her. It was celebrated for its purity and color.

In 1956 Sauer opened his first jewelry store. It was located in the Chopin Building. This store matched the excellence of Parisian jewelers. Its location faced the glamorous Copacabana beach.

In 1963, Sauer certified the Brazilian emerald. He traveled to the Salininha region. He confirmed the discovery of genuine emeralds. Sauer proved these were the first Brazilian emeralds.

The Museu Amsterdam Sauer displays a replica of the Imperial Crown of Dom Pedro II. It is the most important jewel in Brazilian history. The museum is home to the largest rough alexandrite in the world. It weighs 122400 carats. This gemstone entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 1995.

Visitors can also admire a transparent topaz. It weighs 68 kg and a transparent quartz cluster. It weighs 64 kg. These pieces highlight the museum’s extraordinary collection. Scenographic mines show the gems’ formation. It transports visitors back millions of years. This shows the fascinating extraction process.

Amsterdam Sauer received its first Diamonds International Award in 1966. This award recognized the Constellation ring. Inspired by the space race, this ring remains a classic. The brand won two more awards. One was for the Luna bracelet in 1992. The other was for the Fireworks necklace in 2000.

Jules Sauer received the ICA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. This recognized his promotion of colored gemstones. Sauer’s legacy lives on at the Museu Amsterdam Sauer. It is a place where every stone tells a story. It is a testament to Sauer’s vision.
