Picture this: a small village in 1682. Ten farms and five houses without land made up Lundtofte. The total cultivated area was 461.1 tønder land. That’s a surprisingly small amount for a village. This land was used for a three-field system a traditional farming method.

Welcome to Lundtofte a suburb in Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality. This area’s history stretches far back. It was once a small village but grew significantly. The arrival of the Nærumbanen railway and the Brede Works led to major growth. This expansion even resulted in Lundtofte having two town centres one in the central area and one in Brede. Lundtofte doesn’t have one main central hub. This is unusual for a suburb.

Lundtofte’s growth was greatly influenced by urban planning. The Fingerplan a plan for Copenhagen’s expansion around railway lines in 1947 envisioned Lundtofte’s expansion. This plan led to the creation of the city development plan in 1949. Lundtofte’s Nærumbanen station made it a suitable location for development. This led to significant growth and building. The plan even designated areas for building near the Mølleåen stream.

The original plan was later updated in 1966. It planned a near-complete development of the area. This stretch covered from the Furesø lake to the Hørsholm Motorway. Interestingly the area around the Mølleåen was to remain undeveloped a green corridor.

Today Lundtofte is a thriving area. It boasts many shops including supermarkets bakeries butchers and even a greengrocer. There are restaurants and various other businesses. Major companies such as Haldor Topsøe IBM and Electrolux have offices or headquarters in the suburb. This demonstrates its importance as a business hub.

Lundtofte also features several housing types. You’ll find apartments older buildings from the village era and newer houses. The variety shows the changing social dynamics. Many different socio-economic groups live in the area reflecting its mixed history.

Lundtofte’s transport links are excellent. It is well-served by buses and the Nærumbanen railway. A light rail station near Lundtofteparken is planned. This will add to the area’s connectivity improving commuting options. This area has a rich history. It has evolved from a small village into a modern thriving suburb.
