Was Sv. Marija Mandaljena always the heart of this community? Let’s uncover the captivating story of Sv. Marija Mandaljena in Dubrovnik. The first whispers of Sv. Marija Mandaljena date back to 1285. It wasn’t just a church, but the main place of worship for the entire Župa valley, once known as “Župa Žrnovica”. Imagine the scope of its influence. A hundred years later, in 1385, a house was built for a Slavic priest. This priest, assigned to Sv. Marija Mandaljena, served an area now encompassing four parishes. The growth of the community around Sv. Marija Mandaljena has been significant, particularly after the Homeland War. In 1971, there were 619 inhabitants in 163 households. By 2001, this number surged to 2650 people in 664 families. Sv. Marija Mandaljena has seen its share of transformations. The original church was destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. It was rebuilt in 1681. Then it was expanded in 1754. In 1913, the Chapel of the Immaculate was added, followed shortly after by the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel. Restorations took place between 1970 and 1982. The most recent renovation concluded in 2005. Yet, the need for a larger space continues to echo within the community. Sv. Marija Mandaljena isn’t merely a building. It’s a testament to the resilience of a community, a beacon that has guided generations through tumultuous times. Its story intertwines with the lives of those who have sought solace and community within its walls.
