“Oujda? Where’s that?” someone asks. Rue d’Oudjda stands as a testament to cultural connection. It is a bridge between Marseille and a city in Morocco.

Rue d’Oudjda is more than just a street. It whispers tales of shared history. It hums with the promise of future collaborations. But what makes Oujda itself so significant?

Oujda is a major city in northeastern Morocco near the Algerian border. Founded in 994 it has seen centuries of shifting powers. Berber tribes Romans and French colonizers all left their mark. Oujda is the capital of the Oriental region of Morocco. In 2022 its population was over 720000.

The story of Oujda is one of strategic importance. Its location made it a key point between Morocco and Algeria. Control of Oujda shifted between dynasties. It was a prize contested by empires.

France occupied Oujda in both 1844 and 1859. Later it served as a military base to control eastern Morocco in 1907-1908. Much of the modern city’s layout is thanks to French development.

Oujda faced anti-Jewish riots in 1948. The city was a departure point for Moroccan Jews seeking to reach Israel. This was a consequence of the 1948 Palestine war.

In 1954 Morocco permitted Oujda to serve as a logistic center. This was for the Algerian Independence War. The border between Morocco and Algeria near Oujda has been closed since 1994.

Oujda has a semi-arid climate. Its architecture features a traditional old city center. Narrow winding alleys lead to houses and markets.

Culturally Oujda is known for Gharnati music. This style originates from Andalusia. Reggada music is another major traditional genre. It is a war dance from the Beni Znassen tribes.

Oujda faces economic challenges. Its unemployment rate is higher than the national average. However the city relies on trade due to its border location.

King Mohammed VI emphasized reviving Oujda’s economy in 2003. This led to the establishment of Technopole Oujda. It spurred road improvements and airport expansion.

Oujda has twinned with several cities. These include Aix-en-Provence France and Trowbridge UK. Trowbridge has a large Moroccan community with Oujda roots.
