Beyond the city’s hustle lies a marvel of engineering. It is the Golden Gate Bridge, an iconic landmark. This bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County. The Golden Gate Bridge’s story is full of surprising facts.

Did you know a bridge across the Golden Gate Strait was first proposed in 1872? Railroad mogul Charles Crocker championed the idea. But it did not catch on at first.

The Golden Gate Bridge faced many challenges during construction. The strait had rapidly running tides. Frequent storms and fogs made construction difficult. During one fog on August 14, 1933, a cargo vessel collided with the access trestle. This caused serious damage.

Chief engineer Joseph Strauss innovated a movable safety net. This net saved 19 men from falling to their deaths during construction. They were dubbed members of the Halfway to Hell Club. However, tragedy struck on February 17, 1937. The safety net failed under the weight of a scaffolding collapse. Ten men were killed. In total, 11 workers died during the bridge’s construction.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937. It was under budget and ahead of schedule. The main span is 4200 feet long. It is suspended from two cables hung from towers 746 feet high.

The Navy suggested black and yellow stripes for the bridge’s color. The Army Air Corps wanted candy cane red and white stripes. Consulting architect Irving Morrow successfully lobbied for International Orange. This color provided visibility in the fog and fit naturally with the surroundings.

Urban legend says the Golden Gate Bridge is painted continuously end-to-end. But this is not true. The bridge is painted and touched up according to need. Each year, an estimated 5000 to 10000 gallons of paint are used.

On May 24, 1987, about 300000 people squeezed onto the bridge for its 50th birthday. The weight caused the roadway to sag by seven feet. But engineers said the structure remained safe.

The two main suspension cables use 80000 miles of wire combined. This could circle the Earth three times.

The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. Now it is the ninth-longest.

The Golden Gate Bridge’s fog horns blare in different tones. They guide ships safely through dense fog. The color of the bridge, International Orange, was chosen for its visibility in fog.

The Golden Gate Bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It connects communities and inspires awe in all who behold it.
