The question hangs in the air how does Buenos Aires get its name? It’s a story deeply entwined with faith and maritime tradition. Today I will tell you about the origins of Santa María.

Many believe the name Buenos Aires is connected to sailors’ devotion. They were devoted to the Virgin of Buen Ayre. In Spanish, Buenos Aires means good airs or fair winds. It is fitting for a port city.

Let’s step back to the early 16th century. Spanish sailors arrived in the Río de la Plata. They gave thanks to Santa María de los Buenos Aires. They believed she granted them fair winds.

Pedro de Mendoza established the first settlement in 1536. He named it Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre. This translates to City of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Fair Winds. Mendoza’s chaplain suggested the name. He was a devotee of the Virgin of Buen Ayre.

The Madonna of Bonaria from Sardinia inspired the name Santa María. To this day she is the patroness of that Mediterranean island. This first settlement was located in San Telmo. It was south of the city center.

Attacks by indigenous people forced settlers to leave. The settlement was abandoned in 1542. A second settlement was established in 1580. Juan de Garay arrived by sailing down the Paraná River. He came from Asunción now Paraguay’s capital.

Garay called the settlement Santísima Trinidad. Its port became Puerto de Santa María de los Buenos Aires. Over time Buenos Aires became the common name. This happened during the 17th century.

There is a story that a sailor named Sancho del Campo exclaimed: How fair are the winds of this land. This was upon arriving. However historian Eduardo Madero researched Spanish archives. He concluded the name came from sailors’ devotion to Our Lady of Buen Ayre.

So remember as you explore Santa María in Buenos Aires, its name reflects faith. It shows the hopes of sailors seeking safe passage. The residents are called porteños. The name is a constant reminder of the city’s origins. It is a blend of devotion and maritime history.
