Ever wondered where Istanbul’s fashion heart beats? It beats right here at Tekstilkent. This is a massive textile center. It significantly contributes to Turkey’s garment industry.

Tekstilkent emerged in 1986. Areas like Osmanbey became insufficient. So Tekstilkent was established as a cooperative. It spans over 927000 square meters. It consists of 40 blocks.

Inside Tekstilkent Plaza rises. It is one of Istanbul’s tallest buildings. Within the plaza and 40 blocks there are 4297 businesses.

Tekstilkent is located within the Esenler district. It stands side-by-side with Giyimkent. They create a large hub for textile trade.

But Tekstilkent is more than just buildings and businesses. It is a center of innovation. The Telecommunication and Informatics Technologies Application and Research Center operates here. It is known as TETAM.

TETAM is affiliated with Boğaziçi University. Since 2013 TETAM’s scientists work on future technologies. They explore areas like 5G and 6G. They explore nano communication and molecular communication. Artificial intelligence is investigated. Bio informatics and biomedical applications are also studied.

In 2014, TETAM hosted several important events. These included TETAM’s Interdisciplinary Research Workshops. They had the TUBITAK Joint Research Workshop. They also presented the Advanced Intrusion Detection and Prevention Workshop.

Academics collaborate at Tekstilkent. They share ideas. They advance technology. TETAM’s members actively participate in conferences. They share their research. They win awards.

Lale Akarun and Fatih Alagöz received Science Incentive Awards. Taylan Cemgil and Cem Ersoy also received awards. Tuna Tuğcu and Arda Yurdakul were honored. Haluk Bingöl and Pınar Yolum Birbil also received Science Incentive Awards. Ali Salah was awarded the CVPR 2014 Outstanding Reviewer Award.

Research is key at Tekstilkent. Projects range from healthcare applications to green data centers. They include synthetic application generation. Other projects involve user recognition systems.

The scientists publish their findings. They write book chapters. They create articles. They produce conference papers. These publications cover a wide range of topics. They include face recognition and wireless sensor networks. They also research social networks.

Despite its success, TETAM faced challenges. In late 2023, the center was downsized. It moved from 3000 square meters to just 45. Research staff reported that the building was emptied without their knowledge. Personal items were put in trash bags.

Despite the setbacks, Tekstilkent continues. It evolves and adapts. It remains a vital part of Istanbul’s textile industry. It also pushes forward technological innovation.

So as you explore Tekstilkent remember its story. It is a story of commerce. It is a story of research. It is a story of resilience.
