Lost amid the vibrant chaos of Dolapdere stands a testament to Istanbul’s rich cultural tapestry: Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi. This Neo-Gothic church whispers tales of a bygone era. It embodies the resilient spirit of the city’s Greek Orthodox community.

Welcome to the Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi. Its story is one of faith and architectural beauty. It reflects the shifting sands of Istanbul’s demographics. This church’s history is etched in its stones. It stands as a reminder of a vibrant past.

Completed in 1893 the Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi rose during a period of significant change. The Ottoman Empire granted more rights to non-Muslims. This allowed the construction of monumental churches like this one. Mimar Petrakis Meimaridis shaped this religious building. His architectural vision helped define Istanbul’s skyline.

The name Evangelistra comes from the Evangelismos Feast. This celebrates the announcement of Mary’s pregnancy. The church served as a central point for the local Rum community. This population thrived here during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras.

Notice the closed Greek cross plan a design choice that speaks to the church’s architectural style. Two square-sectioned bell towers reach towards the sky. These details were made possible by the Tanzimat period reforms. The Gothic spires and triangular gables further accentuate its unique Neo-Gothic design.

Step inside Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi. Admire the stone work and high ceilings. These architectural elements highlight the blend of styles. Neo-Gothic elements are clearly visible on the exterior facade. They create a striking contrast with the traditional Greek Orthodox features.

For over 130 years the Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi has witnessed the ebb and flow of Istanbul’s history. Recent restoration efforts aim to address the wear and tear. These repairs will ensure this landmark endures for generations to come. Launched in 2022 the restoration includes extensive repairs to the interior and exterior.

Once the Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi hosted a thriving congregation. In the mid-1950s its community numbered 6000 to 7000. Sadly today only a small fraction remains. Just a handful attend Sunday services. Despite the changes in Dolapdere the church retains its architectural and historical significance.

A peculiar incident marks the church’s recent history. In 2005 thieves stole the original Russian bell. A special team scaled the walls unnoticed. The bell was never recovered. However the Dolapdere community in other countries funded a new bell.

Alexandros Meydan the Beyoglu Yenişehir Panayia Evangelistra Kilisesi Vakfı Başkanı explains the church’s history. The original church burned down in the 1850s. The Rum community rebuilt it. The new structure was possible after the Tanzimat reforms.

Prodromos Kozmaoğlu Beyoglu Yenişehir Panayia Evangelistra Kilisesi Vakfı Başkan Yardımcısı notes the damage from neglect. Cracks in the concrete and damage to the drawings occurred. The church’s restoration started with support from the Patriarchate and a generous donor.

As you stand before the Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi remember its story. It is a story of faith and perseverance. It is a tribute to Istanbul’s diverse heritage. The Evangelistra Rum Kilisesi remains a beacon of hope. It connects the past with the present.
