A monument that speaks volumes. That’s what the LGBTQ+ Veterans Memorial is. Right here, at the corner of Halsted and Addison Streets, this granite monument reminds us that courage and patriotism know no sexual orientation or gender identity. The LGBTQ+ Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 2017 by the Chicago chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights. It’s a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ service members, especially during times when they had to serve in silence under policies like “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” The seals of each military branch are etched into the stone, a symbol of the diverse service of LGBTQ+ individuals.
