Here stands Our Lady of Fatima Parish a testament to faith. It rose from humble beginnings. Imagine a sleepy village transformed into a Catholic stronghold.
The story of Our Lady of Fatima Parish begins in 1948. Capuchin Father Gil de Legaria celebrated the first mass. It was held in a make-shift chapel on Lakas Street. This marked the beginning of a dream.
In 1950, Archbishop Gabriel Reyes blessed a chapel. It was constructed on a 200 square meter lot. Our Lady of the Mediatrix of All Graces became the patroness. Dr. Gliceria Santiago Cuejillo donated the image.
The Catholic community grew in Bacood. Lay leaders petitioned for an independent parish in 1958. Father Arsenio R. Bautista was assigned as acting priest in 1959. Various organizations formed including the Catholic Women’s League.
The community’s fervor intensified. A 1293 square meter lot was purchased. It was located at the corners of Lubiran and Magistrado Abad Santos Streets. Architect Vicente J. Lanuza designed the church. The construction cost P250000.00.
Congressman Rafael Aquino and his wife donated the first image. It was an exact replica of the Fatima, Portugal image. Architect Julio Matias later donated a life-size image.
Eight priests have administered Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Father Arsenio R. Bautista and Father Marcelino O. Reyes later became Monsignors. Each priest contributed to the parish’s growth.
Today Father Bong Lopez is the parish priest. The Parish Pastoral Council manages the parish. They work with organizations like the Legion of Mary.
Our Lady of Fatima Parish has many dedicated groups. These include the Knights of Columbus and Mother Butler’s Guild. These groups contribute to the vibrant life of the church. They help those in need and spread the faith.
