What would possess a group of outlaws to seek refuge on a desolate island in the middle of the Kattegat? Look around you. This seemingly peaceful island, Hjelm, was once a haven for pirates and counterfeiters. Hjelm is a small, uninhabited island located about 10 kilometers southeast of Ebeltoft. Don’t let its size fool you. This tiny island played a significant role in Danish history. In 1287, Hjelm became the hideout for Marsk Stig and his band of outlaws. Accused of murdering King Erik Klipping, they were on the run. They found refuge on Hjelm, fortifying themselves against the Danish crown. They even launched daring raids, including a devastating attack on the royal castle of Brattingsborg on the nearby island of Samsø. For eight years, Hjelm was their stronghold, a base for piracy and counterfeiting that kept the Danish crown at bay. Today, the only sign of human presence on Hjelm is a solitary, solar-powered lighthouse, a far cry from its days as a haven for outlaws.
