Protecting and serving life. That is the motto of Semmelweis University. Founded in 1769, Semmelweis University stands as a beacon of medical education in Budapest. It is Hungary’s oldest medical institution. Semmelweis University has a rich history spanning centuries.

Initially established as a medical faculty within the University of Trnava, it has evolved into a leading center for medical and health sciences. In 1777, the university moved to Buda. Then in 1784, it relocated to Pest. This move to Pest allowed for greater access to patients and expanded teaching opportunities.

Semmelweis University adopted its current name in 1969. It honored Ignác Semmelweis a famous professor known as the savior of mothers. The university was the first in Hungary to offer international programs. German instruction began in 1983. English programs followed in 1987.

Semmelweis University comprises six faculties. These faculties cover all aspects of medical and health sciences. They include medicine, dentistry and pharmaceutical sciences. The András Pető Faculty is also part of the university. The Faculty of Health Sciences is another key component. The Faculty of Health and Public Services completes the academic structure. A doctoral college further enhances its research capabilities.

With over 14000 students from 110 nations, Semmelweis University boasts a diverse academic community. Foreign students comprise about 37% of the student body. The Faculty of Medicine is the largest. It accounts for 37% of the total student population.

Education at Semmelweis University is available in Hungarian English and German. The university offers One-tier Master Programmes Bachelor’s programs and Master’s programs. Postgraduate education is also available. Each year, about 1500 students receive diplomas.

Integrated master programs are available in medicine dentistry and pharmacy. These programs offer a direct path to a degree. They bypass the two-tier degree system. Bachelor’s programs are offered at the Faculty of Health Sciences and the András Pető Faculty. These programs last for four years. Master’s programs are available at the Faculty of Health and Public Services and the Faculty of Health Sciences. These programs typically last for 1.5 years.

Semmelweis University’s Doctoral College offers a wide range of study programs. These programs cover various medical and health-related fields. The degrees awarded are recognized by the European Union. They are accepted in many other countries.

The Dental Clinical and Training Centre provides modern facilities for dental education. The Basic Medical Science Centre supports scientific research with advanced laboratories.

Semmelweis University’s main governing body is the Senate. The rector serves as its president. The Senate oversees the university’s educational and research activities. The leadership includes the Rector and Chancellor. Vice-Rectors assist in various areas such as education science and clinical affairs.

Ignác Semmelweis and Albert Szent-Györgyi are among the university’s notable figures. Semmelweis was known for his work on puerperal fever. Szent-Györgyi was the only Hungarian Nobel laureate to receive the award for research conducted in Hungary. He discovered vitamin C.
