Did the Víztorony always grace Margaret Island with its elegant presence? No. Its story begins in 1911, designed by the brilliant Ray Rezső Vilmos and brought to life by the pioneering engineer, Dr. Zielinski Szilárd. This Víztorony, rising 57 meters above the island’s heart, wasn’t just a beautiful landmark. It was the tallest and oldest water tower in Hungary, a vital part of the island’s life. It provided water, thanks to its 600 cubic meter tank. Even then, it offered breathtaking 360-degree views of Budapest. The Víztorony embraced its dual role as a water tower and observation deck. In 1977, its beauty and historical significance were recognized, earning it the title of a protected urban monument. Today, the Víztorony no longer functions as a water tower. The water tank is gone, partially replaced by a restaurant. But its spirit lives on. Visitors can still ascend 152 steps to the observation deck, 33 meters high. From there, the panoramic view of Budapest unfolds, a mesmerizing reward for the climb. Interestingly, despite not being owned by them, the Víztorony is the emblem of the Budapest Waterworks, gracing their logo. This magnificent structure isn’t just a water tower, it’s a testament to engineering ingenuity and artistic vision, standing proudly against the Budapest skyline.
