Standing here in front of Broadwater Farm, you’re likely to see a council-owned housing estate, but let me tell you, the story behind it is far from ordinary. It’s a place that’s witnessed immense change, marked by both triumph and tragedy.
Broadwater Farm, a sprawling estate built in the late 1960s, stands as a testament to a time when the UK was gripped by the idea of modern, high-density housing. The estate, shaped after Corbusian ideas, was an experiment in social housing with towering concrete blocks connected by walkways, forming what was famously dubbed “streets in the sky.”
This estate, though, has seen its share of hardship. It’s a place that became notorious in the 1980s after Alice Coleman’s book, Utopia on Trial, labelled Broadwater Farm one of the worst places to live in the UK. In 1985, the estate tragically became a focal point of social unrest when violent riots erupted. They were fueled by racial tensions and mistrust between the community and the police force.

The “streets in the sky” were demolished, shops were moved to ground level, and a network of CCTV cameras were installed. Despite this, Broadwater Farm faced another challenge in 2018, when residents were evacuated from eleven of the estate’s blocks due to concerns over their structural integrity in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
Today, Broadwater Farm faces ongoing regeneration with a focus on building new homes and enhancing public spaces. In 2007, a new Children’s Centre opened, winning the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Award for its innovative and forward-thinking design.
