Around 1900, a silent giant arose in Gielsdorf. This is the Wasserturm Gielsdorf. It stands as a brick sentinel. The Wasserturm Gielsdorf was built by the Cologne Deutzer Motorenwerke. This company also constructed a similar water tower in nearby Brenig in 1907. The Wasserturm Gielsdorf held a vital role. It supplied water to 1200 households until its retirement in 1972. Imagine the countless cups of tea, baths drawn, and gardens watered, all thanks to the Wasserturm Gielsdorf. This 14-meter tower held 72,000 liters of water. It silently witnessed the changing times. After its decommissioning, the Wasserturm Gielsdorf faced an uncertain future. Several ideas were proposed. These included a youth center, a cafe, a taxi headquarters, and a community center. However, none of these plans came to fruition. In 2002, a Cologne business consultant, Alexander Lichtenberg, purchased the Wasserturm Gielsdorf for a symbolic price. He had a vision for its revitalization. The sale came with a condition. Lichtenberg had to renovate the tower. The estimated cost was around 46,000 euros. The deadline was 2009. Lichtenberg planned to renovate the tower. He also wanted to add residential and office space. This involved relocating the village square. The community agreed to the plan. However, even after extending the deadline to the end of 2010, no work began. In 2011, the community took legal action against Lichtenberg. In 2013, the Wasserturm Gielsdorf was auctioned off for 36,000 euros. The Wasserturm Gielsdorf stands as a testament to the history of public water supply. It is a protected monument. It silently watches over Gielsdorf. Its future remains unwritten. Its brick walls hold stories of the past and whispers of what might be.
