What’s in a name? In Maidstone’s case, quite a bit. We’re standing in Maidstone, a suburb of Melbourne named after a town in Kent, England. You see, back in the 1850s, this area was being surveyed, and someone noticed its proximity to Footscray, another Melbourne suburb. It just so happens that Maidstone and Footscray are also neighbors in Kent. A lightbulb moment, perhaps fueled by a touch of homesickness, led to our Maidstone inheriting its name from across the globe. The connection doesn’t end there. Both Maidstones are known for their industrial past. Here in Melbourne’s Maidstone, factories once lined the streets, producing everything from ammunition to pipes. Today, though, you’ll find a mix of residential areas and parklands. The old factory sites have given way to new homes, a testament to Maidstone’s transformation. Yet, echoes of the past remain, woven into the fabric of the suburb. The iconic Art Deco and Californian Bungalow homes from the 1920s and ’40s still stand, whispering stories of a bygone era.
