Beachcroft Bridge

Spanning the enlarged Southwestern Motorway, the Beachcroft Bridge is a striking blue and white cable-stayed structure. It links Hillsborough and Onehunga, a vital connection for pedestrians and cyclists. Beachcroft Bridge replaced an older, smaller bridge that interfered with motorway widening plans. The new Beachcroft Bridge is wider, almost 65 meters long, and 3.5 meters wide. It gracefully arches over the motorway and its Queenstown Road off-ramp. A new cycle track is being built alongside Queenstown Road. This track connects with Beachcroft Bridge and extends along Onehunga’s scenic waterfront via Orpheus Drive. The bridge is part of the larger $230 million Manukau Harbour Crossing duplication project. The old footbridge was quickly demolished after Beachcroft Bridge opened. This allowed for the new roadway to be sealed underneath. A second four-lane motorway bridge over the harbour is also nearing completion. The community was concerned about the demolition of the old footbridge before the new Beachcroft Bridge was ready. It served as a safe route for children to get to school. The alternative route, across the busy Queenstown Road roundabout, was considered too dangerous. The decision to delay demolition reflects the importance of Beachcroft Bridge to the community. Its distinctive blue and white color scheme reflects its coastal location near the Manukau Harbour. The tall, raked pylon and stays are painted white, evoking a nautical feel. The main span and back span are a vibrant Resene Fun Blue, further connecting the bridge to the nearby harbour. Beachcroft Bridge’s design also considered the surrounding landscape. Its asymmetrical structure complements the topography and contrasts with the numerous power pylons in the area. This bridge has even won awards for its urban design, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.
