Beneath our feet lie secrets millions of years old. Here at the Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site, time unfolds in layers of rock and sand. This site holds a pivotal place in Australia’s prehistoric past. Beaumaris is more than just cliffs and a beach. It’s a window into an ancient world.

Imagine this bay six million years ago. The landscape was vastly different. Marine life thrived in warm waters. Over time, their remains became the fossils we find today. The cliffs here tell a story of geological change. They form the geological type locality for the Cheltenhamian Stage. This is a rock unit of the late Miocene epoch.

Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site contains one of Australia’s richest and most diverse fossil collections. Marine mammals and sharks once dominated these waters. Beaumaris is the only Australian site with fossils of the shark genus Megascyliorhinus. The oldest known Australian albatross Diomedea thyridata was found here. We also find a variety of sharks’ teeth plus bones of seals, whales, penguins and diprotodontid marsupials.

The Black Rock Sandstone is the major rock outcrop. It dates back five to six million years. Common fossils in this layer include molluscs, brachiopods, echinoderms, corals and crustaceans. Below this sandstone is a gravelly bed. It contains nodules of phosphate and iron. This bed has yielded vertebrate fossils including sharks’ teeth and bones of seals and whales.

The cliffs have been a significant geological research site since the 1890s. Many rock and fossil collections were taken from here. Scientific papers were published about them. The site continues to reveal new discoveries. This shows the full scientific and educational potential has yet to be realised.

Beaumaris is not only significant for fossils. It also has artistic and landscape importance. Since the late 19th century artists have captured its beauty. Charles Conder, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton painted here. Their artworks are now in major galleries. The Beaumaris artist camp from 1886-1887 helped develop Australian Impressionism.

The vegetation here is dominated by coastal scrub. Coast tea-tree and coast wattle are common. You might also see mirror bush and coast beard-heath. Characteristic birds include the little penguin and little pied cormorant. White-faced herons and nankeen kestrels also frequent this area.

The Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site is a reminder of our planet’s long history. It is a place where art and science intertwine. As we look out over the bay, consider the millions of years that shaped this place. Remember the creatures that once called it home. The Beaumaris Bay Fossil Site offers a glimpse into the deep past. This place connects us to the ever-evolving story of life on Earth.
