Ever wonder how streets get their names in Paris? The story of Rue du Chevalier de Saint-George is quite interesting. It involves a hero, a villain, and a long-overdue correction of history.

This street wasn’t always Rue du Chevalier de Saint-George. Until 2001, it was named Rue Richepance. It honored General Antoine Richepance. He was a controversial figure. Richepance had been ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte to reinstate slavery in Guadeloupe in 1802. This action led to a bloody conflict. Many people of color were killed or chose to commit suicide rather than return to slavery.

The Convention had abolished slavery in French colonies on February 4, 1794. But the ideal of equality soon fell into disfavor.

For years, Paris honored Richepance. This was despite his role in restoring slavery. Finally, in December 2001, the Paris City Council decided to change the street’s name. The decision came about because French citizens from the West Indies requested it.

The new name honored Joseph Bologne, also known as Chevalier de Saint-George. He was a composer, conductor, and military leader. Born in Guadeloupe in 1745, Saint-George was a remarkable figure. He was a virtuoso of the sword and the bow. He was also a Colonel of the Legion of the Americans and of the South. More importantly, he stood for the emancipation of slaves.

The original street sign had Saint-George’s birth year wrong. It listed 1739 instead of 1745. This error was later corrected. The corrected sign identifies him as a composer, conductor, and captain in the National Guard.

Rue du Chevalier de Saint-George is more than just a street. It’s a symbol of justice. It reminds us of the fight for equality. It also commemorates a truly remarkable man. Next time you are here, take a moment to reflect on the history. Think about the stories behind the names. This street is a reminder that even streets can tell stories.
