Budapest holds many bridges. Margaret Bridge or Margit híd is one of its most iconic. It connects Buda and Pest across the Danube. More than that, it links Margaret Island to the city.

Margaret Bridge is the second-northernmost and second-oldest public bridge in Budapest. This three-way bridge has a unique story. It was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin. The Maison Ernest Goüin et Cie built it between 1872 and 1876. Émile Nouguier was the engineer in charge.

Margaret Bridge was Budapest’s second permanent bridge. Széchenyi Chain Bridge was the first. The bridge leads to Margaret Island. Its two sections enclose 165 degrees at the branch toward the island. This unusual geometry has a reason. The small extension to Margaret Island was added later. Lack of funds delayed its construction by two decades.

Margaret Bridge stretches 637.5 meters in length. It measures 25 meters in width. Imagine the hustle and bustle that has crossed this path.

During World War II, Wehrmacht sapper troops blew up all Budapest bridges in January 1945. They were retreating to the Buda side. Margaret Bridge suffered damage earlier. On November 4, 1944, an accidental explosion destroyed its eastern span. Six hundred civilians and 40 German soldiers died in the blast.

Reconstruction involved lifting original steel from the river. It was incorporated into the rebuilt structure. Margaret Bridge underwent a total overhaul starting August 21, 2009. Road traffic stopped for at least a year. However, trams maintained partial service using temporary tracks. The works are now complete. Pedestrians, cars, and trams use the bridge again.

Soon after its opening, Margaret Bridge became a place for people in distress. They sought to end their lives due to personal or financial problems. This wave of suicides inspired János Arany. He was a renowned Hungarian poet. Arany wrote a ballad called “Híd-avatás” or Bridge Inauguration. It was about the jumpers. Leaflets of the ballad were distributed. Mihály Zichy’s romantic drawings illustrated them.

In 1888, Margaret Bridge did not connect to Margaret Island. Ujlipótváros streets were planned. In 2009, work focused on the western section’s southern side. Renovations took place in 2010 and finished in 2012.

The Margaret Bridge stands as a testament to Budapest’s resilience. It has survived wars, accidents, and societal changes. It connects not just Buda and Pest but also the past and the present. It is more than just steel and concrete. It is a symbol of hope, art, and remembrance. As you cross, remember the stories beneath your feet. Remember the lives touched by this iconic structure.
