Inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, their small Satsang assemblies laid the foundation for something grander. Growth led them to Glen Ellyn, where the first BAPS mandir in Chicagoland was consecrated in 1984. The congregation continued to expand. In 1994, land was acquired in Bartlett, and the vision of a larger complex began to take shape. The AksharPurushottam SwamiNarayan Spiritual Center complex unfolds in phases. First came the Haveli, a cultural center inaugurated in 2000. Then, the magnificent shikharbaddha mandir. This traditional stone structure, built according to the Shilpa Shastras, is a masterpiece of hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone. Imagine 2,000 craftsmen in Rajasthan, meticulously shaping 70,000 cubic feet of stone. Picture 40,000 individual pieces, shipped across the globe to Bartlett, then assembled like a giant 3D puzzle. The AksharPurushottam SwamiNarayan Spiritual Center is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of spiritual and cultural life. Within its ornate walls, the murti of Swaminarayan resides, flanked by Gunatitanand Swami. They are worshipped together as Akshar-Purushottam Maharaj. Throughout the day, swamis offer aarti, a ritual of light and song, and thaal, the offering of food to the deities. The AksharPurushottam SwamiNarayan Spiritual Center also resonates with the sounds of weekly assemblies, devotional hymns, and spiritual discourses. Youth activities abound, from Hinduism classes to Indian music lessons and Gujarati language training. Festivals like Diwali and Ram Navmi fill the mandir with color and celebration.
