Gazing upon the Bayraktar Yeni Camii, has anyone considered the sheer audacity of its original patron? Safiye Sultan, wife of Sultan Murad III and mother of Sultan Mehmed III, envisioned this grand mosque in 1597. She wasn’t just building a place of worship. Safiye Sultan intended the Bayraktar Yeni Camii to be a symbol of expanding Islamic influence in a district then largely inhabited by Jewish merchants. This area, Eminönü, was Istanbul’s primary commercial hub. Placing the Bayraktar Yeni Camii here was a bold political move. It was met with resistance, financial concerns, and resentment from the Janissaries who saw it as an unnecessary expense. The project was further complicated by its location and the displacement of the local population. Construction began under the direction of architect Davut Ağa, a student of the renowned Mimar Sinan. However, Ağa died in 1599, and Dalgıç Ahmed Çavuş took over. The project stalled upon Mehmed III’s death in 1603. Safiye Sultan lost her position of power, and the Bayraktar Yeni Camii stood incomplete for decades, slowly falling into disrepair. The Great Fire of 1660 ravaged Istanbul, heavily damaging the unfinished structure. This disaster, however, paved the way for the mosque’s completion. Turhan Sultan, mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, saw an opportunity for a pious act. She commissioned the architect Mustafa Ağa to finish the Bayraktar Yeni Camii. It was finally inaugurated in 1665, then called the New Valide Sultan Mosque, later shortened to Yeni Cami, or New Mosque. The Bayraktar Yeni Camii stands as a testament to the ambition of two powerful women. It also represents a significant period in Ottoman history known as the Sultanate of Women.
