How strong must a gate be to withstand the trials of time? Look at this magnificent entrance. This is the Ploče Gate, also known as Vrata od Ploča. It’s one of the two main entrances to Dubrovnik’s Old Town. This eastern gate has witnessed centuries of Dubrovnik’s history. The Ploče Gate’s story began in the 14th century. It was a time when Dubrovnik was growing as a maritime republic. However, the Ploče Gate we see today is not exactly the one from the 14th century. The gate has undergone several modifications and reconstructions throughout its existence. The devastating earthquake of 1667, which reshaped much of Dubrovnik, also impacted the gate. Rebuilding efforts after the earthquake gave the Ploče Gate a blend of medieval and Baroque architectural elements. Despite these changes, the Ploče Gate still exudes a distinctly medieval aura. Notice the statue above the inner gate. It depicts St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, holding a model of the city. This symbolizes his role as the protector of Dubrovnik. For centuries, the Ploče Gate served as a crucial part of Dubrovnik’s defense system. Imagine approaching the gate as a traveler or a potential invader in centuries past. First, you would have encountered a stone bridge. This was followed by a wooden drawbridge. This drawbridge would be raised every evening and lowered again in the morning, adding an extra layer of security to the city.
