The Château de Deuil a significant landmark in Gouvernes boasts a rich history. Its origins stretch back to at least 1240. The name itself possibly derives from a Celtic word meaning a low-lying clearing with springs and ponds. This perfectly encapsulates the Château’s serene location.
For centuries the Château de Deuil was held by various influential families. The Gaudète family owned it in the 1500s. Nicolas Gaudète a notable commissioner of artillery even died fighting near Boulogne. His heart however was returned to Gouvernes a testament to the deep connection between this man and his ancestral lands. Throughout its history the estate included grand buildings. It also had stables granaries courtyards and a dovecote. Its vast size spanned 166 arpents 78 perches covering nearly a quarter of Gouvernes’s area.
The French Revolution brought about a tragic end for the Château. It was dismantled. Only fragments remain. The Louis XIV porch stands defiant. The Jeanne d’Arc tower stands as a silent guardian. These remnants speak of glory. They also speak of the passage of time. The existing farmhouse buildings are all that’s left of this once magnificent castle. A testament to the revolution’s destructive power.
