A thousand-armed goddess watches over us. Welcome to Tocho-ji Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s the oldest Shingon temple on Kyushu island. Founded way back in 806 by the legendary monk Kukai. He established it after returning from China. He prayed for the spread of Tantric Buddhism eastward.

Imagine Kukai’s journey. He traveled across treacherous seas. He brought back new wisdom. He built this temple a seaside sanctuary. But time is a fickle beast. A fire consumed the original temple. It was at the end of the 16th century. The second lord of Chikuzen province Kuroda Tadayuki rebuilt it here. His family the Kurodas even made it their family temple. Three generations of Kurodas rest here buried on the temple grounds.

Tocho-ji Temple isn’t just about history. It holds treasures. Look closely. Inside rests a Senju Kannon statue. A thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy. Carved from a single log of Chinese black pine. It’s only 87 centimeters tall. It emanates an incredible presence. You can only see this hidden Buddha during Kukai’s birthday celebrations. It’s a national treasure declared so in 1904.

Then there’s the Rokkaku-do. A hexagonal building. It’s a revolving library of scriptures and sculptures. Local merchant Bungoya Eizo funded its construction in 1842. Ito Hirazaemon a skilled carpenter built this marvel. It showcases the collaboration of merchants across western Japan. It’s open to the public on the 28th of each month.

And if that’s not enough look at the Daibutsu. The Great Buddha. Its carving started in 1988. Four years later it stood complete. It’s 10.8 meters tall. It weighs 30 tons. It’s one of Japan’s largest seated Buddha statues after Nara and Kamakura’s. The halo behind it is even more impressive. 16.1 meters high. It’s carved with countless Buddha images. A treasure exhibition hall sits beside the Great Buddha.
