Picture this. A network of charming two-story buildings. This is Jian Ye Li in Shanghai. This isn’t just any neighborhood. Jian Ye Li is a significant part of Shanghai’s history. Built between 1930 and 1938 by the China Construction Land Company Jian Ye Li originally housed 260 stone-gate houses. These weren’t just homes. They were a community.

Jian Ye Li was designed with unique horse-head shaped walls. These walls are a distinctive feature. They are reminiscent of Anhui province’s architectural style. The buildings themselves are lovely. They are two-story structures of clean red brick. Each building is unique. Each boasts a distinctive arched doorway.

Over time Jian Ye Li’s population grew. More than 3000 residents eventually called Jian Ye Li home. Life in Jian Ye Li was vibrant. But the neighborhood faced challenges. From 2003 to 2005 over 1100 residents were relocated. This was a difficult time for the community.

In 1994 Jian Ye Li received city-level protection status. This marked a turning point for the neighborhood. In 2007 a major renovation project began. The goal was ambitious. The aim was to restore Jian Ye Li to its original stone-gate glory. The project transformed Jian Ye Li. It also spurred considerable debate and scrutiny.

The result is a captivating blend of old and new. Jian Ye Li’s restoration is a testament to Shanghai’s rich past. The renovated Jian Ye Li now includes hotels shops and restaurants. It successfully blends historical charm with modern amenities. Jian Ye Li stands as a testament to Shanghai’s enduring spirit. It stands as a symbol of preservation and renewal. A truly special place. A place where history and modernity meet. A place you will never forget.
