Whispers of history echo through the halls of Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine, a testament to changing times and enduring legacies. Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi stands in Kadıköy, in the Rasimpaşa neighborhood. Locals know the area as Yeldeğirmeni, one of the oldest settlements in the district. The school’s central location, near Kadıköy Square, has made it a popular choice for students across Istanbul. Originally built by the French in 1905, the building first served as Sainte Euphemie Kız Koleji, a girls’ school. Even the daughter of famed Turkish storyteller Ömer Seyfettin attended this prestigious institution. In 1935, the school was transferred to the Ministry of National Education. It was then reopened as the 3rd Ortaokul, a middle school. The school kept this name until 1956 when it was renamed Kemal Atatürk Ortaokulu. For a period between 1963 and 1967, the building housed two schools. It served as Kemal Atatürk Ortaokulu in the mornings and Kadıköy Ticaret Lisesi, a commercial high school, in the afternoons. In the 1991-1992 school year, it transitioned into Kemal Atatürk Lisesi, a general high school. The middle school section was gradually phased out. A foreign language-focused program was added in the 2001-2002 school year. Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi comprises three blocks and an inner courtyard. The main building, Block A, houses classrooms, science labs, a rich library, and a reading room. Block C, adjacent to Block A, has a sports hall upstairs and a conference hall downstairs. Sadly, Block B, with its ten classrooms, was damaged in a nearby construction accident in 1991 and remains unusable. The school also suffered damage from the devastating earthquakes of August and November 1999, rendering parts of Block A and Block C unsafe. Due to the extensive damage, the school was evacuated in August 2002. Classes were temporarily held at the Ahmet Sani Gezici building on Acıbadem Street. Since 1935, Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi has nurtured countless graduates. One notable alumnus is Pilot Yüzbaşı Cengiz Topel, who was tragically shot down and killed during the 1963 Cyprus Operation. The school’s historical library commemorates his service and sacrifice. The original school building itself is a 2nd-degree historical monument. Reinforcement and repair work began in 2005, after a long process of approvals and planning with the Council of Historical Monuments. The school returned to its historic Yeldeğirmeni location in 2009, becoming a foreign language-focused “Super” High School. It finally became Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi, an Anatolian High School, in the 2012-2013 academic year. Today, Kemal Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi continues its legacy of education. It stands as a symbol of resilience, a place where history is not just learned, but lived.
