Štikovica is part of a larger settlement called Zaton, which includes the charming hamlets of Zaton Veliki, Zaton Mali, and Vrbica. Štikovica is a relatively new settlement, primarily composed of villas and houses with apartments for rent. Štikovica’s beauty belies a difficult past. During the Croatian War of Independence, Štikovica suffered under occupation, enduring looting and destruction. Many houses were damaged. This period left scars on the community. Yet, the resilient spirit of Štikovica persevered. Today, tourism and fishing are the mainstays of the local economy. Štikovica offers visitors a tranquil escape. There’s a lovely restaurant in the village. It also boasts one of the most beautiful pebble beaches in the area, inviting you to relax and soak up the sun. For those seeking a bit more activity, there’s the local amateur water polo club, founded in 1999. The club competes in Dubrovnik’s “Divlja liga” (Wild League). In 2001, the combined population of Štikovica and Zaton was 858, with only about a hundred residing in Štikovica itself. As you explore Štikovica, take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking views of Zaton Bay. The bay stretches for 3 kilometers, a picturesque inlet northwest of Dubrovnik.
