Whispers of ancient stones. This is the Szent Mihály Öregtemplom. It stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. This unassuming chapel in Budajenő holds within its walls stories of devotion, loss, and artistic expression. Szent Mihály Öregtemplom traces its roots back to the 12th century. It served as the heart of the medieval village of Jenő. The current Gothic structure, built in the 14th century, replaced a former semicircular church. It features an octagonal sanctuary, a single nave, and a gabled roof. The eastern facade has a simple triangular gable. A wooden-framed door sits in the center. Two buttresses stand at the corners with steeply pitched tops. A rectangular window graces the east corner of the south facade. The sanctuary has a semicircular, recessed window on its southeast and east walls. A barrel-vaulted sacristy adjoins the sanctuary on the north side, topped with a half-gabled roof. A small quadrangular window punctuates the east wall of the sacristy. Another rectangular window adorns the north wall of the nave itself. Carved stone details embellish the church walls, hinting at the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Inside Szent Mihály Öregtemplom, a remarkable Romanesque stone carving, possibly dating back to the 12th or 13th century, takes center stage. Located above the sacristy door, it depicts two standing figures. They hold an object, possibly representing the church itself. These roughly hewn figures, perhaps portraying the church builders, stand out against the background. The figure on the right likely represents a male, while the other, with long hair, could be female, holding a key. This key may symbolize the rights associated with the church. A six-stationed Calvary leads to Szent Mihály Öregtemplom. This Calvary was built in the 17th century. The nearby Ó-temető (Old Cemetery), an irregular quadrangle, dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Its earliest headstone bears the year 1787, the latest 1869. The cemetery displays two distinct headstone types: simple block forms with crosses and heart-shaped stones with crosses above. Later Baroque and Classicist styles are also present. These headstones, crafted primarily from Sóskút limestone or sandstone, but some from Tardos red limestone, create a tapestry of remembrance. A large stone cross stands in the cemetery’s center. Its base, adorned with lyre-shaped volutes, bears the inscription “1795”. The members of the Black Benedictine order found their final resting place within this hallowed ground. Szent Mihály Öregtemplom, though now a cemetery chapel, remains a poignant echo of Budajenő’s past. It is a place where the stones themselves whisper tales across the ages.
