Hidden within the Cathedral’s aged walls a forgotten treasure lay sleeping. This is the story of Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Fundación. For centuries a small image of the Virgin Mary resided there. It was venerated in various churches serving as the city’s main church. Then in 1853 a larger more impressive image replaced it. The smaller one was tucked away forgotten until 1952.
During extensive Cathedral renovations workers uncovered the long-lost image. Dust-covered and damaged it lay amongst discarded objects. Monsignor Luis de Santiago recognized its Baroque style and artistic merit. He saved it. The image of Nuestra Señora de la Fundación was rediscovered. It was more than just an old statue it was a piece of Montevideo’s history.
An expert examined the statue. It was carved from poplar wood and polychromed. The report confirmed it was pure Baroque art from the early 18th century. Despite significant damage it possessed historical and religious value. The image had been removed from the main altar in 1853. It had been there since Montevideo’s founding. Its small size didn’t suit the renovated altar.
In 1953 the Archbishop asked about an image for the Marian Year celebrations. Monsignor de Santiago mentioned the rediscovered statue. The Archbishop ordered its restoration. The artist Ignacio Puig meticulously restored it. The restored image was stunning.
The Vatican granted permission for an annual feast day for Nuestra Señora de la Fundación. On August 25th each year Montevideo celebrates. In 1957 Cardinal Barbieri blessed the image. A replica was placed in the newly established Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Fundación. It opened in 1960.
The Oblatos de María Virgen initially oversaw the parish. They did so until 1991. Today the parish continues to thrive. It is a testament to the enduring faith of Montevideo and the miraculous rediscovery of Nuestra Señora de la Fundación. The church stands as a symbol of the city’s history and devotion. It is a place where faith and history intertwine. This is the legacy of Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Fundación.
