Can a church be a home? For many, West Plano Presbyterian Church is exactly that. West Plano Presbyterian Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to community, born from the vision of Covenant and Trinity Presbyteries. In the early 1970s, under the guidance of Pastor Maurice Barnett, the church began to take root. First in homes, then at Davis Elementary School, the congregation sought connection and purpose. Officially organized in March 1975, West Plano Presbyterian Church embraced its unique identity, situated “west of Central Expressway.” The name stuck, reflecting the burgeoning community it served. The congregation built its home at 2709 Custer Road in 1978. They held their first service in the new building on February 12th. The building dedication followed shortly after in March. This marked a significant milestone for West Plano Presbyterian Church. The church’s story intertwines with the history of Plano itself. West Plano Presbyterian Church welcomed a Mother’s Day Out program. They provided space for both the Plano Senior Citizens and Geriatric Center groups. These partnerships demonstrated the church’s commitment to community outreach. West Plano Presbyterian Church also extended its compassion beyond Plano’s borders. They partnered with Christ United Methodist Church to support a Vietnamese family, offering housing, healthcare, and essential services. This act of generosity underscored the church’s dedication to helping those in need. The church continued to evolve, experiencing changes in leadership and expanding its physical space. An education wing, fellowship hall, and youth loft were added in 1986. This expansion created more opportunities for fellowship, learning, and spiritual growth. Music has always been integral to West Plano Presbyterian Church. The installation of a pipe organ in 1997 enriched the worship experience. The vibrant youth choir, active in the 1980s and 90s, shared their musical gifts through performances at other Texas churches. West Plano Presbyterian Church’s story is one of ongoing service and adaptation. They established Jeremiah’s Plot, a community garden that provides fresh produce to the Plano Food Pantry. They partnered with other churches to address homelessness through Family Promise of Collin County. Even the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t diminish the church’s spirit. They transitioned to online services, outdoor gatherings, and virtual connections. West Plano Presbyterian Church remains a vital presence in Plano. It stands as a testament to the power of faith, community, and compassionate service.
