In the heart of the 12th arrondissement, nestled amidst charming Parisian streets, stands a majestic haven of faith, the Église de l’Immaculée Conception. Its Neo-Romanesque architecture, reminiscent of a bygone era, transports you to a world of quiet contemplation. This church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, is the result of a remarkable story of devotion and community spirit.

The late 19th century saw Paris experiencing a surge in population, especially in the Picpus and Bel-Air neighborhoods. Recognizing the need for a new parish, a devout woman named Mademoiselle Roland-Gosselin, the aunt of the future Bishop of Versailles, stepped forward. She purchased a plot of land formerly owned by the daughters of the Marquis de Croix, and with immense generosity, financed the construction of the Église de l’Immaculée Conception.

Work commenced in 1875 under the expert guidance of architect Édouard Delebarre-Debay. The project was completed within six months, a testament to the fervor and dedication of the community. On 29 September, the vicar general, Abbé Caron, blessed the newly erected church, followed by a formal inauguration by Cardinal Guibert, Archbishop of Paris.

The Église de l’Immaculée Conception became a vibrant heart of the community, offering solace and spiritual guidance to its residents. The chapel dedicated to Saint-Henri, a former place of worship, was repurposed as a space for religious instruction for the young. In 1893, the right façade was expanded with the addition of the Sainte-Radegonde Chapel and a welcoming building for visitors.

The church boasts an impressive organ built by the Abbey brothers in 1881, later revitalized by Benoist & Sarélot in 1979. The liturgical furnishings, including the altar, the presidential seats, the ambo, the crucifix, and the baptismal font, are the masterful creations of Dominique Kaeppelin, the renowned sculptor, who updated the church’s interior in the 1980s. These works of art are a testament to the enduring spirit of faith within the parish.

Today, the Église de l’Immaculée Conception continues to serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring legacy of its benefactors. As you stand before its imposing facade, take a moment to appreciate the rich history that resonates within its walls.
