Parroquia Del Carmen

Gazing up at the Parroquia Del Carmen, one might imagine it has always stood here, a timeless sentinel over Bariloche. But its story, much like Bariloche itself, is one of growth, transformation, and resilience. The Parroquia Del Carmen isn’t just a church; it’s a living testament to the community’s spirit. The story begins shortly after Bariloche’s founding, with a modest chapel measuring roughly 10 meters by 5. This humble structure, inaugurated on July 15, 1780, served as the spiritual heart of the fledgling community. It wasn’t until 1807 that the chapel was elevated to the status of parroquia, thanks to the efforts of Monsignor Benito Lué y Riega. Time took its toll on the original structure. Decades later, a new church was established on Mitre Street in a converted house. Yet even this building couldn’t contain the growing community’s spiritual needs. Then, in 1881, on land donated by General Julio Argentino Roca, the foundation stone of the current Parroquia Del Carmen was laid. Roca himself served as the godfather of this momentous occasion. The first nave was inaugurated in 1885. During this ceremony, Monsignor Cagliero received the image of Our Lady of Carmen. Interestingly, Brazilian flags, captured in an 1827 battle, were prominently displayed within the church. The Parroquia Del Carmen continued to evolve. Driven by a dedicated committee, the side naves were completed between 1921 and 1923. Church bells, donated by President Agustín P. Justo and his wife, were installed in 1929, their arrival by ship a grand event. Finally, in 1937, the statue of Our Lady of Carmen, sculpted by Quintín Piana, was placed on the facade, marking the completion of the main structure. Even then, the story doesn’t end. In 1987, a mausoleum was added to house the remains of Commander Luis Piedra Buena and his wife. This final addition underscores the Parroquia Del Carmen’s deep connection to Bariloche’s history. In 2003, the church received national recognition, declared a national historical heritage site. So, as you stand before the Parroquia Del Carmen, remember, you’re not just looking at a building.
