Gateway to Opportunity. That’s Bensenville’s motto. A fitting title for a village that transformed from a quiet farming community into a bustling suburb near O’Hare International Airport.
Bensenville’s story begins long before its official establishment in 1873. Originally known as Tioga it thrived as a stop along the Milwaukee Road now Canadian Pacific railway line. The name Bensenville however is a testament to its German heritage. It is named after Bensen a village in Germany. A post office was established in 1873. The name Bensen was already in use so they cleverly added ville.
The village’s growth accelerated in the early 20th century. The Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul Railroad built a roundhouse and freight yard in 1916. This brought jobs and new residents many of whom were Mexican immigrants. Then came World War II. The federal government constructed an aircraft plant just outside Bensenville. This plant operated from 1943 to 1945. After the war the plant became part of O’Hare International Airport.
Bensenville’s proximity to O’Hare dramatically altered its destiny. The airport’s construction required land. This led to a legal battle between Bensenville and Chicago over annexation. Chicago won. Many buildings were relocated or demolished. The modern O’Hare we know today was born.
Bensenville is more than just an airport suburb. It boasts vibrant neighborhoods and thriving businesses. The Edge Ice Arena is a key landmark. It once housed the Chicago Steel junior ice hockey team. It now serves as the practice facility for the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks. Victory Auto Wreckers a 7-acre auto recycling facility also deserves mention. It is famous for its long-running television commercials. These commercials feature Bob Zajdel and the infamous door falling off a car.
The village has a rich history full of surprises. The Barker-Karpis Gang notorious criminals used a house on May Street to hold kidnap victims. William Hamm Jr in 1933 and Edward Bremer in 1934 were held here after being kidnapped from Saint Paul Minnesota. This dark chapter highlights a different side to Bensenville’s past.
Today Bensenville is a diverse community. People from various ethnic backgrounds call it home. The residents take pride in their town. They enjoy a blend of quiet suburban life and the excitement of a major international airport nearby. Bensenville’s journey is a testament to its resilience adaptability and spirit.
