How many secrets can a pile of rubble hold? Before you, lie the remnants of Crkva sv. Stjepana. It may not seem like much now, but this church, this humble collection of stones, once stood as a testament to Croatian royalty. Crkva sv. Stjepana was built in the 10th century, commissioned by King Stjepan Miroslav himself. Legend has it that the King and his wife, Queen Margarita, were so taken by a small church on this spot, a church dedicated to St. Stephen, that they vowed to build a grander one in its place. They showered Crkva sv. Stjepana with gifts, including a relic of the True Cross, donated by the Queen. Queen Margarita later returned to Dubrovnik after her husband’s death. She lived a pious life and was buried in front of the church. Sadly, the great earthquake of 1667 reduced this once magnificent structure to the ruins you see today. The church was never rebuilt, standing as a silent echo of its former glory. Yet even in its fragmented state, Crkva sv. Stjepana whispers its story. As you gaze upon these weathered stones, let your imagination rebuild the majestic church. Picture the royal couple praying within its walls, the sunlight streaming through stained glass windows long gone. Crkva sv. Stjepana may be in ruins, but its connection to Croatian history, to faith, and to royal patronage, remains strong and vibrant.
