“Iskandar Puteri,” Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim declared. That’s what this area was called after he relocated the capital here in 1855. Now, we stand before the Iskandar Puteri City Council. It is an organization with a fascinating history.

The Iskandar Puteri City Council wasn’t always known by that name. Its story began as the Johor Bahru Tengah District Council in 1978. Back then, it oversaw a much smaller area. Over time, Iskandar Puteri grew. In 2001, the council became the Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council.

The area kept expanding. Finally, on November 22, 2017, it achieved city status. That’s when the Iskandar Puteri City Council was officially launched. This made Iskandar Puteri the 14th city in Malaysia. It was also the second in Johor.

The Iskandar Puteri City Council plays a vital role. It manages public health and sanitation. It also handles waste removal. The council is in charge of town planning. Environmental protection falls under its responsibilities too. They oversee building control. Also, the council contributes to social and economic development. Maintaining urban infrastructure is another key function.

YB Tuan Haji Ahmad Nazir bin Haji Mohd Nasir serves as Mayor. YM Ungku Suzana binti Ungku Mohammad is the City Secretary. The Iskandar Puteri City Council headquarters is in Medini.

Iskandar Puteri itself has a rich past. It was once known as Sempit Puteri. This means “narrow princess”. The name referred to the narrowest point of the Tebrau Straits. In 1866, it was renamed Johor Bahru.

The Iskandar Puteri City Council has witnessed tremendous change. It started small. It has grown into a major administrative body. It supports the dynamic city of Iskandar Puteri. This council symbolizes Johor’s progress. It shows its commitment to a modern and thriving future. The Iskandar Puteri City Council will continue to shape this city.
