Ready to explore a hidden gem in south-east London? We are standing before St John’s. This district, named after our destination, boasts a rich history and unique character.

St John’s history is deeply entwined with the vision of the Lucas family. They conceived Deptford New Town as an affordable housing alternative for the working class. This happened in the mid to late 19th century. Imagine a place where spaciousness and affordability met.

Let’s take a closer look at St John’s Church. It was established in 1855. The church sits atop the hill next to the railway station, which shares its name. The church was designed by P C Hardwicke.

The area around St John’s is defined by distinct boundaries. Brookmill Road and Lewisham Way form its borders. Friendly Street marks the western edge. Railway embankments define the south-east.

St John’s station has played a vital role in the area’s development. It opened in 1871. This was a time when housing construction boomed.

Let’s talk about conservation. The Brookmill Road Conservation Area was established in 1972. The St John’s Conservation Area followed four years later. These areas protect the unique architectural character of St John’s.

The area has seen dramatic shifts in its population. House prices quadrupled around the arrival of the Docklands Light Railway. This created a mix of wealthy commuters and long-term residents. The area’s ongoing gentrification is evident in Brockley’s Farmers’ Market.

Now, let’s delve into a darker chapter. On December 4, 1957, St John’s was the site of one of Britain’s worst railway disasters. Two trains collided in dense fog. Ninety people died. One hundred seventy-six were injured.

The 5.18 pm electric train from Charing Cross was stationary near St Johns station. The 4.56 pm steam express train from Cannon Street crashed into it at 30 mph. The bridge overhead collapsed due to the impact, worsening the catastrophe.

The official report blamed Driver W J Trew of the steam express. It also highlighted the unfortunate bridge support design.

Despite this tragic event, St John’s has persevered.

Looking ahead, St John’s faces both opportunities and challenges. Greenwich’s expansion and Lewisham’s transport hub influence the area. Deptford’s vibrant atmosphere also plays a role.

St John’s station continues to connect the area to London. Many bus services link St John’s to other parts of the city.

Did you know that St John’s Society was formed in 1998? It works to improve and promote the area. They also safeguard it. The society organises events like the annual picnic in the park.

Just a short walk from the station is the Brookmill pub. This Victorian pub dates back to 1854. It offers a relaxing space and beer garden.

St John’s stands as a testament to resilience, community spirit, and architectural preservation.
