Have you ever wondered about a place named for ducks? Pilcaniyeu’s story begins with its name. It comes from the araucanian words “pilkan” meaning ducks and “niyeu” meaning place. So Pilcaniyeu means “place of ducks”.

Pilcaniyeu sits 82 km east of San Carlos de Bariloche. It lies in the foothills of the Andes. This location places it on the ancient Patagonian Massif.

The town’s history is rooted in indigenous trails. These trails became the foundation for today’s Ruta Nacional 40 and Ruta Nacional 23. Indigenous groups and European immigrants settled here. They took advantage of the land offered by the Avellaneda Law of 1891. Estancias dedicated to sheep farming soon dotted the landscape around Pilcaniyeu.

The arrival of the railroad in 1931 was a turning point for Pilcaniyeu. The train station was built near the original settlement. Pilcaniyeu was practically reborn next to the tracks. Hotels trading houses and other essential buildings sprang up. Pilcaniyeu became a hub for commerce.

The Comision de Fomento was created in 1939. This gave Pilcaniyeu juridical status. However the rise of synthetic fibers hurt the local economy. Sheep farming declined impacting Pilcaniyeu’s prosperity.

In 1979 the Comision Nacional de Energia Atomica CNEA established a technological complex here. This complex focused on nuclear fuel activities including uranium enrichment.

The Pilcaniyeu Technological Complex enriches uranium. It uses the gaseous diffusion method. This method increases the concentration of U235. This was a significant scientific achievement for Argentina.

The Argentinian Armada wanted to build atomic submarines in the country. Jimmy Carter then cut off the sale of enriched uranium to countries that refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1978.

Vice Admiral Carlos Castro Madero started working on the project. In November 1983 he announced the success of uranium enrichment.

Pilcaniyeu’s uranium enrichment plant was deactivated in 1984. This was due to economic reasons and political pressure from the United States.

In the 1990s the plant was placed under nuclear safeguards. These safeguards were from the Agencia Brasileno-Argentina de Contabilidad y Control ABACC.

In 2006 there was a proposal to reactivate the Pilcaniyeu Technological Complex. It was part of the relaunch of the Argentinian Nuclear Plan.

Pilcaniyeu is surrounded by unique flora and fauna. Low shrubs like neneo and coiron cover the land. Guanacos ostriches and foxes roam freely. The Pichi Leufu River flows through the area. It offers opportunities for fishing.

Today Pilcaniyeu faces the future. Its history is marked by both progress and challenges. From its araucanian roots to its role in nuclear technology Pilcaniyeu continues to evolve. The spirit of its early settlers lives on. They adapted to a changing world. Pilcaniyeu remains a testament to resilience.
