Standing before the Monument of Liberty, what stories do its stones whisper? This monument, officially known as Abide-i Hürriyet, stands as a solemn reminder of a pivotal moment in Ottoman history. It is a memorial dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives defending the Ottoman Parliament during the 31 March Incident.

The Monument of Liberty is located in the Şişli-Mecidiyeköy district of Istanbul. It marks Hürriyet-i Ebediye Tepesi. This translates to Eternal Liberty Hill. The hill is the highest point in Şişli. It rises 130 meters above sea level.

Imagine Istanbul in the late 19th century. The Ottoman Empire was undergoing significant change. Conservatives opposed the Tanzimat reforms. These reforms aimed to modernize the empire. Sultan Abdulhamid II initially accepted a constitution. He opened the first Ottoman Parliament in 1876. However, he later adjourned it in 1878. He reverted to absolute rule.

But progressive forces were growing stronger. They pressured Abdulhamid II to resume Parliament in 1908. This marked the Second Constitutional Era. An uprising occurred on April 13, 1909. This was known as the 31 March Incident. Forces from Rumelia called the Army of Action suppressed the countercoup. Mahmud Şevket Pasha commanded this army. Abdulhamid II was deposed and exiled.

The Monument of Liberty was inaugurated in 1911. This commemorated the second anniversary of the 31 March Incident. The monument became a symbol of modernity, democracy, and secularism in Turkey. It now hosts official ceremonies and public gatherings.

Notice the design. Renowned Ottoman architect Muzaffer Bey won the contest to design it. The monument resembles a cannon firing into the sky. It stands on a triangular marble base. The names of the soldiers buried here are carved on each side. The monument also features the tughra of Mehmed V Reşad. He was the sultan when it was erected.

Initially, 74 soldiers killed during the 31 March Incident were buried here in 1911. Later, four high-ranking Ottoman officials were also buried here. These include Midhat Pasha. He was a key architect of the first Ottoman constitution. Mahmud Shevket Pasha is also buried here. He commanded the Army of Action. Talat Pasha rests here. He was a former Minister of the Interior. Enver Pasha is buried here. He was a Minister of War.

The Monument of Liberty is more than just stone and marble. It represents a struggle for democracy and freedom. It has served as a meeting point for democracy and civil rights demonstrations. The monument also features in the logo of Şişli Municipality. As you stand here, remember the sacrifices made for liberty. Reflect on the ongoing importance of democracy and freedom. The Monument of Liberty stands as a timeless reminder of these values.
