Ants. Millions of ants. That’s how Morro da Formiga, or “Ant Hill,” got its name. Our story begins in the early 20th century as Rio de Janeiro bustled with progress. City officials were laying out new streets near what is now the Muda neighborhood in Tijuca. They encountered a peculiar problem: a massive infestation of ants. These weren’t your average kitchen ants. Workers described them as enormous, with anthills “as tall as a person.” The workers would tell everyone they were heading to “Morro das Formigas”, and the name stuck. Morro da Formiga is more than just an anthill, though. It’s a vibrant favela brimming with life, history, and tradition. Initially settled by Portuguese and German immigrants in 1911, Morro da Formiga saw significant growth between the 1940s and 1960s. Migrants, mainly from Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais, flocked to the area seeking better lives. They settled along the Cascata River basin, a tributary of the Maracanã River, eventually reaching the slopes of Morro Sumaré. This influx of people brought with them rich cultural traditions, especially from Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo. You can still find culinary echoes of those regions in the feijão tropeiro and galinha caipira enjoyed by residents. Morro da Formiga is the birthplace of the Império da Tijuca samba school, founded in 1940. This school, the first to use the word “Império” (Empire) in its name, proudly displays a crown as its symbol. The samba school is a vibrant hub of community life, hosting an annual feijoada on Saint George’s Day, April 23rd. Monthly macarronada gatherings showcase pagode groups, passistas, and other samba elements. The school even offers free percussion, viola, and cavaquinho lessons to residents. Beyond samba, another cherished tradition thrives here: the Folia de Reis. Starting in the 1940s, this vibrant folk festival continues to this day. Even the leisure activities in Morro da Formiga reflect the community’s spirit. The Residents’ Association manages the sports court, hosting soccer matches, gymnastics classes, volleyball, and futsal. On weekends, the court transforms into a stage for pagode and funk performances. From its unusual name to its rich cultural tapestry, Morro da Formiga is a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of the human spirit. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, where history whispers from the hillsides, and where the spirit of community thrives.
