Could you imagine naming a mountain after the author of a national anthem? That’s precisely the story of Cerro López. This mountain stands tall in Río Negro Province. We are about 25 kilometers west of San Carlos de Bariloche right now.
Cerro López reaches a height of 2,075 meters above sea level. Its name honors Vicente López y Planes. He was the writer of the Argentine National Anthem. Francisco Pascasio Moreno gave the mountain its name back in 1880.
At the foot of Cerro López lies Colonia Suiza to the east. Lakes Moreno and Nahuel Huapi are to the north and northwest. Arroyo López gathers meltwater from Cerro López. It flows down the northern slope. The water eventually drains into Lago Moreno Oeste.
Near the edge of the forest, you will find Refugio López. It sits at 1,620 meters above sea level. The Club Andino Bariloche opened it on April 15, 1933. The refuge can accommodate up to 100 people. You can reach it by a path around the mountain. Another option is a trail where Arroyo López crosses the Circuito Chico route.
In summer the days here are warm. Nights are cool. There is not much rain. The temperature averages around 18°C. It can reach highs of 29°C and lows of 9°C. Daylight stretches late into the evening.
In winter temperatures can dip between 8°C and -10°C. Snowfall is common.
The slopes of Cerro López are covered in coihue and ñire trees. Their colors change beautifully with the seasons. At the foot of the mountain lies the peaceful Colonia Suiza.
Birdlife is abundant here. You might spot woodpeckers doves or hummingbirds. You may also see cormorants and calandrias.
Guillermo Martin said that around 70000 people visited the trails and refuges of Bariloche in the summer of 2009.
Alex Hemmi and Sergio Herzen first ascended Cerro López. They scaled the north face and north tower on February 13 1943.
